A Gold Coast Diamond in the Rough

I had just spent months prepping my clients’ home for the market in Alameda, as they settled into a rental nearby. This seemed the best course of action and the least disruptive for their two young children. The parents knew they wanted a house with good bones—one that they could renovate and/or restore—and in close proximity to the kids’ schools and a park. Establishing a rental while their house sold also meant focussing on the vision of the next house to come.

The problem was… most sellers had already ‘fixed up’ their homes to put on the market. My clients wanted to do the fixing and weren’t intimidated by lots of work. While pretty houses with trendy paint colors, stainless appliances, and cozy staging do well, it really wasn’t what they had their hearts set on, and our search began.

The c.1915 house on 1413 San Antonio seemed just right, and we set about getting inspections to determine its true state. The foundation would need replacing, as would many of the original windows, the drainage seemed non-existent, and while the garage looked ready to fall over, it was actually not so bad. The inside hadn’t been updated for decades but had built-ins and hardwood floors that could glow once again with a little (okay, maybe a lot) of TLC.

But there was a Jack & Jill set of bedrooms and bath on the main level, perfect for the kids, an eat-in kitchen, formal dining room, family room leading out to the back yard, and a sunny living room that overlooked… their favorite park across the street! School was literally just down the street from there. Its location couldn’t be beaten for my buyers.

While it wasn’t the prettiest street on the block, the others in this Gold Coast neighborhood were breathtaking, and they knew whatever they put into restoring this property would be oh-so welcomed here. Soon, their new home would fit into the neighborhood once again, and it’s been a pleasure knowing I was part of their future, recommending contractors, researching its history, and listening to their goals.

The Gold Coast boasts some of the most architecturally stunning homes in Alameda while being a stroll from Crown Beach, Trader Joe’s, restaurants, parks, top-rated schools, and a Ferry ride into San Francisco.

It’s a perfect place to call home!
