The Spectacular Backyard that Happens to Come with a Lovely Home

We’d looked at other houses. We’d prepared offers and preapproval letters on other houses. They were all in the ‘just okay’ category, and I think we all knew that. I was okay that they didn’t submit the offer or didn’t get it; I knew they hadn’t found the right one yet.

And then we went to see 6231 Fairlane Drive.

While the curbside may seem unassuming yet lovely… well, it just is. But the front door beckoned, and in we went, and were blown away. You could see pops of the backyard from the entry, and we all proceeded to walk through the entry, through the big kitchen and back outside again, where we gasped. The seller had begun with a dirt hillside, many years ago, and tended it like she did her children, turning it into blossoms of color and life and beauty that belongs in photographs. And all of this had unobstructed views of San Francisco, the Bay and Oakland.

Back inside, we discovered a calming, open floor plan of dining room, living room and kitchen, all overlooking the views and the neighborhood, and opening out to the rear patios, yard and gardens. Down the hall, two bedrooms and a full bath, adjacent a spacious master bedroom suite with French doors leading onto the patio and gardens. All on one level.

Downstairs, a spacious two-car garage with walls of built-in storage flank the laundry room and wine cellar. There’s also a walk-in attic, for off-season storage.

The Glen Highlands neighborhood sits next to Montclair, with expansive views and wide, pretty streets. Way up on Fairlane, it’s quiet to come home to, yet conveniently located near Hillcrest and CPS schools, College Avenue shopping and restaurants, Rockridge BART, Lake Temescal, Montclair Village and all the Bay Area has to offer.

Their offer was accepted just before Shelter-in-Place mandates, and I am grateful to the patience and understanding of the seller, her listing agent, and my buyers—the new and very happy owners!—for the hoops they jumped through with elegance, ease and humor. Kindness encircled this transaction, and I know it will continue to spread to others.

#StayHome… what a dreamy place for that mandate!
